Pedagogy: Its Prospects and Challenges
Primary tabs

06/06/2023 - Pedagogy refers to the theory and practice of teaching and learning (TnL). It encompasses the methods, strategies, and approaches used by educators to facilitate learning and enhance students’ intellectual, social, and emotional development.
“Pedagogy involves understanding how students learn and adapting instructional methods to meet their needs and abilities. It includes various aspects such as curriculum design, lesson planning, instructional techniques, classroom management, and assessment,” explained Dr. Azni Yati Kamaruddin, Head of the Department of Education and Humanity Foundation, Faculty of Education, Universiti Malaya, during the Academic Discussion of the doctoral Program in Educational Sciences, UNY Graduate School.
Pedagogical approaches may vary depending on educational philosophy, cultural context, field of study, and learners' age and developmental stage. Pedagogy serves as a comprehensive framework that guides educators in their instructional practice, aiming to create meaningful and effective learning experiences for students.
The term "new pedagogy" broadly refers to emerging or innovative pedagogical approaches that differ from or go beyond conventional teaching and learning methods. New pedagogy often seeks to address the limitations of traditional approaches and adapt to the changing needs of 21st-century learners.
Although there is no single label encompassing all new pedagogical approaches, several widely recognized concepts include: Progressive Pedagogy, Constructivist Pedagogy, Inquiry-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, Project-Based Learning, Experiental Learning, and Personalized Learning.
During the event, which was attended by lecturers and students of the Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences, Dr. Azni Yati highlighted current trends in pedagogy, including Flipped Classroom, Gamification, Design Thinking, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Culturally Rseponsive Pedagogy, Place-Based Education, and Adaptive Learning.
Looking ahead, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into pedagogy holds significant potential to transform how education is delivered and experienced. Some of the key benefits of combining AI with pedagogy include: personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, enhanced assessment and feedback, smart content generation, and collaboration and support for teachers.
